Kashmir Witnesses Fresh Snowfall and Rain
On Wednesday, various regions in the upper reaches of Kashmir experienced a fresh round of snowfall, while the plains witnessed heavy rainfall, according to officials. Tourist destinations like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam received light to moderate snowfall overnight, continuing at the time of the latest reports. Additionally, snowfall was reported in Kokernag (Anantnag district), Handwara (Kupwara), and Gurez (Bandipora district).
Reports indicate that other higher areas in Jammu and Kashmir, including along the Zojila axis on the Srinagar-Leh highway, also witnessed fresh snowfall. The weather office predicts the likelihood of light to moderate rain or snow in many places within the Union Territory on both Wednesday and Thursday. There is a possibility of heavy snowfall in select higher reaches, including Kupwara, Bandipora, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Shopian, Kulgam, and Anantnag districts.
The forecast suggests mainly dry weather with a chance of very light snow in isolated higher regions on February 2. From February 3 to 4, the expectation is for light to moderate rain or snow in several locations, followed by dry weather until February 10.
The 40-day intense winter phase, known as ‘Chilla-i-Kalan,’ concluded on Tuesday without significant snowfall in the plains of Kashmir and below-average precipitation in the higher elevations. While there was some light to moderate snowfall in the latter part of the 40-day period, the majority of ‘Chilla-i-Kalan,’ characterized by higher chances of frequent snowfall, remained dry.
This winter witnessed an extended dry spell in the valley, with no snowfall in the plains. Throughout the 40-day harsh winter period, a cold wave typically envelops the region, causing a considerable drop in temperatures and leading to the freezing of water bodies and supply pipes. Despite the culmination of ‘Chilla-i-Kalan,’ cold conditions persist in Kashmir, transitioning into a 20-day ‘Chilla-i-Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day ‘Chilla-i-Bachha’ (baby cold).
Meanwhile, there has been an improvement in night temperatures across the Kashmir valley. Srinagar city, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a low of 2.2 degrees Celsius, up from 0.8 degrees Celsius the previous night. Pahalgam recorded a minimum temperature of 0.1 degrees Celsius, Qazigund 0.4 degrees Celsius, Kokernag minus 0.2 degrees Celsius, and Kupwara 1.3 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg registered a low of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius, an increase from minus 6 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest place in the valley.
