Soup Protest Targets Mona Lisa for Sustainable Food Rights
In a bizarre incident at the Louvre museum in Paris, two protesters targeted Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic “Mona Lisa” by hurling red and orange soup at the bullet-proof glass protecting the masterpiece. The act was a demonstration demanding the right to “healthy and sustainable food.” The protesters questioned the priorities, asking, “What is more important? Art or the right to healthy and sustainable food?” as they stood in front of the protected painting, expressing concerns about the agricultural system and the challenges faced by farmers.
Activists Criticize Agricultural System
The women involved in the protest asserted that the current agricultural system is “sick,” emphasizing the difficulties faced by farmers, some of whom are struggling and even dying at work. The demonstration aligns with ongoing protests by French farmers demanding better pay, improved tax policies, and regulatory changes. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal recently announced measures to address some of these concerns, but road blockages and demonstrations have persisted across the country.
Climate Activists Adopt Unusual Tactics
This incident is part of a series of unconventional protests by climate activists who are targeting renowned artworks to draw attention to environmental issues. The protesters aim to encourage more significant efforts to phase out fossil fuels and prioritize the protection of the planet. While the “Mona Lisa” remains protected behind thick glass, these acts underscore the growing urgency felt by activists in addressing environmental and agricultural challenges.
