Kashmir NC President Urges Govt Accountability Amidst Soaring Power Outages
Kashmir National Conference Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani expressed concern over the increased power curtailment in the Kashmir division, emphasizing the heightened distress experienced by consumers. Wani, echoing the sentiments of the public, asserted that power outages had reached unprecedented levels in recent months, exacerbating the winter challenges faced by the people. He insisted that accountability must be established for the government’s perceived negligence in addressing the situation.
Wani criticized the government for disregarding warnings about a decline in water discharge from dams and failing to formulate a proposal to purchase power from the Northern Grid. He held the government fully responsible for the genesis of the crisis, emphasizing that it was not an overnight occurrence. Additionally, he pointed out a prolonged dry spell that the administration had failed to acknowledge, expressing astonishment that despite assurances from authorities, the situation had not improved and had, in fact, worsened, plunging the region into prolonged darkness.
Accusing the government of inadequately addressing the power crisis, Wani stated, “Unscheduled power cuts and prolonged outages in the Kashmir Valley have reached an alarming level, causing widespread disruptions.” He highlighted the adverse impact on various sectors, including business, education, healthcare, and overall quality of life, due to the lack of consistent electricity supply.
Wani questioned the failure of the so-called investment boom to translate into an improved electricity distribution system, causing frustration among citizens who had borne significant financial burdens without reaping the intended benefits. He called on the government to release a white paper detailing the steps being taken to mitigate the crisis, asserting that people had the right to know why, despite paying substantial bills, they continued to suffer from persistent power woes.
