Migratory Birds Thrive in Kashmir Wetlands Despite Prolonged Dry Spell
In spite of the prolonged dry period in Kashmir, a significant influx of migratory birds has chosen to uphold their centuries-old tradition of wintering in the wetlands of the region. These avian visitors, hailing from countries such as China, Russia, Japan, Central Asia, and various European nations, have flocked to approximately 25 out of the 400 lakes in Kashmir for their winter residence.
Ifshan Deewan, the Wildlife Warden of the Wetlands Division in Kashmir, reported that nearly one million migratory birds currently inhabit the wetlands across Kashmir. She emphasized that out of this impressive number, the Hokarsar wetland alone is hosting 300,000 to 400,000 of these feathered guests.
The final count is expected to be available in February following a comprehensive census.
Contrary to concerns, the ongoing dry spell has not adversely affected the well-being of these migratory birds, as stated by Ifshan. She attributed this resilience to the ample water reserves present in wetlands like Hokarsar and Shalbugh, which have effectively shielded the avian residents from any detrimental impacts.
“At this point, we have not observed any harmful effects on the wetlands due to the dry spell in the valley. Our team is diligently monitoring the system on a daily basis,” she assured.
The Wetlands Warden further highlighted that the department has implemented multiple measures to enhance the habitability of all wetlands. These efforts have resulted in a significant increase in bird activity, showcasing the success of the initiatives taken to ensure the well-being of the migratory guests in Kashmir’s wetlands.
