Jhelum River Hits Record-Low Water Level Amid Prolonged Dry Spell in Kashmir
Officials reported on Sunday that the water level in the Jhelum River has reached its lowest point, attributing this decline to an extended dry period in Kashmir. At Sangam (Anantnag district), the river was flowing at -0.75 feet, and at Asham (Bandipora district), it measured -0.86 feet on Sunday morning. This marks the lowest recorded water level in the river, a condition last observed in November 2017.
Kashmir has been experiencing an extended dry spell throughout the winter, characterized by minimal snowfall. In December, the region recorded a substantial 79 percent rainfall deficit. Furthermore, during the initial two weeks of January, most parts of the valley received no precipitation. Notably, the renowned Gulmarg ski resort, typically blanketed in snow during this season, currently lacks any snow cover.
The plain areas of Kashmir have seen no snowfall, and the upper reaches of the valley have received a below-average amount of snowfall. The dry weather has led to a significant increase in bushfires across the hilly regions of the valley. This uncharacteristic weather pattern raises concerns about water resources and ecological balance in the region.
