Srinagar Temperature Rises Above Freezing, Raises Concerns Amidst Absence of Snowfall
After an almost month-long period, Srinagar experienced a rise in night temperatures above the freezing point on Saturday, reaching 0.2 degrees Celsius. The last instance of the minimum temperature surpassing freezing occurred on December 15, 2023, with a recorded minimum of 0.5 degrees.
The elevation of the minimum temperature above freezing during the 40-day duration of the severe winter cold known as ‘Chillai Kalan’ is viewed with concern. The absence of snowfall in the plains of the Valley thus far is troubling. Yesterday, people throughout Kashmir engaged in special prayers, seeking Allah’s blessings for rain.
The dearth or minimal occurrence of snowfall during Chillai Kalan poses a potential crisis for the water bodies in the Valley during the summer months. The discharge of water from these bodies in the summer relies on sufficient winter snowfall.
Current minimum temperatures stand at 0.2 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, minus 1 in Gulmarg, and minus 0.6 in Pahalgam. In Leh town in the Ladakh region, the night’s lowest temperature was recorded at minus 5.6, while Kargil reached minus 10.4, and Drass recorded minus 5.
Jammu city registered a minimum temperature of 4 degrees, Katra at 7.2, Batote at 8, Bhaderwah at 5.8, and Banihal at 3 degrees. The fluctuations in temperature across the region highlight the climatic variations experienced in different areas.
