Kashmir is grappling with ongoing coldwave conditions characterized by sub-zero temperatures, with officials reporting limited respite from the bone-chilling cold in the Valley on Tuesday.

According to officials, on Monday, Srinagar experienced a night temperature of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius, showing a slight increase from the previous day’s minus 4.3 degrees. Qazigund recorded a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 4.2 degrees on Sunday. In the ski resort town of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, the night temperature was minus 4.6 degrees Celsius on Monday, slightly lower than the minimum temperature the night before.

Pahalgam, situated in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district and serving as a base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius, up from the previous night’s minus 5.3 degrees. Kokernag settled at minus 1.2 degrees Celsius, and Kupwara recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.5 degrees.

Minimum temperatures in other areas included 5.1 degrees in Jammu city, 6 degrees in Katra, 2.1 degrees in Batote, 0.6 degrees in Bhaderwah, and zero degrees in Banihal.

Kashmir is currently in the grip of ‘Chilla-i-Kalan,’ the 40-day harshest winter period marked by a severe cold wave that leads to a considerable drop in temperatures. This results in the freezing of water bodies and water supply lines in various parts of the Valley. During this period, the likelihood of snowfall is highest, particularly in the higher reaches, which receive heavy snowfall.

The region has been experiencing a prolonged dry spell, with a 79 percent deficit in rainfall recorded for December. There has been no precipitation in the first week of January. Most plain areas of Kashmir have not seen snowfall, while the upper reaches have received less snow than usual. The Meteorological office predicts mainly dry weather until January 12.

The ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’ period is expected to conclude on January 31. However, cold conditions will persist with a 20-day ‘Chilla-i-Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day ‘Chilla-i-Bachha’ (baby cold) following its conclusion.
