Kashmir-Valley Faces Unprecedented Dry Spell: Concerns Rise Over Water Scarcity and Impact on Tourism

The Kashmir Valley is currently experiencing an unusual and severe dry spell during the typically harsh winter period known as Chilla-i-Kalan. This unexpected lack of precipitation has raised concerns among both residents and tourists in the region.

The absence of significant snowfall has heightened worries about potential water scarcity across Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir Meteorological Department has forecasted no substantial weather activity until January 14, with generally cloudy skies expected on January 9.

The dry spell has not only affected the aesthetic appeal of Kashmir’s picturesque landscapes but also poses a threat to the livelihoods of those dependent on the usual snowfall patterns. The water levels in the River Jhelum and other bodies of water throughout the Valley have significantly decreased due to the lack of snow and rain. Experts are expressing concerns about the potential consequences if this dry spell persists.

Even the renowned ski resort Gulmarg has witnessed reduced snowfall this year, disappointing both locals and tourists who typically visit during the winter to witness the pristine beauty of snow-covered mountains. The situation is similar in hilly areas such as Gurez, Karnah, Keran, and Mughal Road, which typically experience heavy snowfall during this winter period but have received less or no snow so far.

Tourist destinations like Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, and others have also seen significantly less snowfall compared to previous years. The notable drop in snowfall this winter has diminished the charm of these tourist spots, which usually captivate visitors with their mesmerizing snowy landscapes.
