The official mentioned that Srinagar had witnessed a minimum temperature of minus 5.6°C the previous night.

The Kashmir Valley is currently in the midst of ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ the 40-day harsh winter period that extends until January 30. However, the conclusion of this period does not mark the end of winter. It is succeeded by a 20-day stretch called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ from January 30 to February 19 and a 10-day period known as ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) from February 20 to March 1.
The meteorological official predicted generally cloudy weather with a possibility of light rain/snow over “extreme isolated higher reaches” on January 9. From January 10-15, generally dry weather is anticipated. The official added that no significant weather activity is expected until January 15.
