Bashir Ahmad Rescued Alive from Well Ordeal, Undergoes Treatment for Multiple Injuries
Bashir Ahmad, who endured a harrowing ordeal trapped in a well in a Kunzar village, has been successfully rescued by a joint effort involving the police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and dedicated civilian volunteers. Despite being alive, Bashir is now undergoing treatment for multiple bone fractures and Rhabdomyolysis, a serious medical condition.
The extent of Bashir’s injuries includes fractures in both collar bones and a coccyx injury, the coccyx being the tailbone. One senior doctor highlighted the severity of the situation, emphasizing the critical focus on managing the Rhabdomyolysis. This condition involves the breakdown and disintegration of muscle tissue, leading to muscle death. The toxic components released during this process enter the bloodstream, posing a threat to the kidneys and potentially resulting in acute renal failure.
Currently, Bashir is receiving oxygen support, remaining conscious and alive. Medical intervention has been initiated, with the administration of medication. However, if the desired positive impact is not achieved, the possibility of dialysis is being considered, according to the senior doctor overseeing Bashir’s case.
The dramatic rescue operation, broadcast live globally, marked a significant achievement for the SDRF and Jammu and Kashmir Police. Bashir had fallen into a 35-ft deep well, buried under tons of stones forming the well’s perimeter. The rescue required painstaking efforts to manually remove the stones, spanning over eight hours. Thousands of onlookers gathered at the Barzulkla hamlet in Kunzar to witness and support the rescue mission.
Following his rescue, Bashir was promptly taken to a local hospital and later transferred to SKIMS Hospital in Srinagar, where top-tier medical professionals are attending to his recovery. Bashir, a skilled laborer specializing in well management, is a father of six, with most of his children being minors. During the incident, his wife, overwhelmed by the situation, received medical attention in an ambulance stationed near the rescue site.
The incident underscores the risks associated with well-related activities in Kashmir, where people often resort to dug wells and bore wells for water needs. As the water table decreases and water body discharge declines, individuals opt for these wells, leading to the necessity of regular upkeep and repairs. Bashir’s rescue stands as a rare occurrence, defying the odds as he emerged alive after enduring hours trapped under tons of debris.
