Chilly Nights in Kashmir: Pahalgam Takes Lead as Valley’s Coldest Spot

Minimum temperatures in Kashmir continued their descent for a second consecutive night, causing disruptions to daily life in the Valley due to dense fog on Monday, according to officials. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, registered a low of minus 2.3 degrees Celsius, slightly lower than the previous night’s minus 2.1 degrees. Pahalgam, a crucial base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.3 degrees Celsius, down from the previous night’s minus 3.9 degrees Celsius. Officials noted that Pahalgam was the coldest place in the Kashmir Valley.

Gulmarg, the renowned ski resort in Baramulla district, reported a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius. Qazigund recorded a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag witnessed the mercury settling at minus 1.6 degrees and Kupwara at minus 3.0 degrees. The Meteorological Department forecasted predominantly dry weather in the region until the end of the month.

A thick layer of fog enveloped Srinagar early on Monday, significantly impacting daily activities. Morning traffic flow was below average, with vehicles moving at reduced speeds due to poor visibility. At 8:30 am, the visibility in Srinagar was reported to be 91 meters due to the fog cover, prompting officials to advise motorists to exercise caution. Srinagar airport reported delays in some flights from Delhi due to poor visibility in the national capital.

The India Meteorological Department indicated zero visibility around Palam in Delhi at 8:30 am. Kashmir is currently in the grip of ‘Chilla-i-Kalan,’ the 40-day harshest winter period characterized by a severe cold wave and a considerable drop in temperature. This leads to the freezing of water bodies, including Dal Lake, and water supply lines in various parts of the Valley. The likelihood of snowfall is highest during this period, especially in the higher reaches.

‘Chilla-i-Kalan’ is expected to conclude on January 31. Nevertheless, cold conditions will persist afterward with a 20-day ‘Chilla-i-Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day ‘Chilla-i-Bachha’ (baby cold).
