NIA Takes Control of Kokernag Encounter Case Following September Incident
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has assumed control of the Kokernag encounter case in Jammu and Kashmir that transpired in September of this year, resulting in the demise of a colonel, a major, an Indian Army soldier, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) from J-K Police, and Lashkar-e-Taiba militant Uzair Khan, according to sources on Thursday.
A source with knowledge of the matter informed ANI that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued an order earlier this week, prompting the NIA to take charge of the case. Subsequently, the NIA initiated a new case and commenced an investigation, assigning responsibility to a Superintendent of Police-ranked officer stationed at its regional branch office.
On September 13, in the Gadole Forest of Kokernag in Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army suffered the loss of 19 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) Commanding Officer Col Manpreet Singh, company commander Major Ashish Dhonchak, Jammu and Kashmir Police Deputy Superintendent of Police Humayun Bhat, and trooper Pardeep Singh. The operation concluded after a six-day endeavor on September 19.
Addressing the Kokernag encounter, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh asserted that some vested interests sought to exaggerate the incident. According to the DGP, terrorists initiated the gunfire, resulting in the fatalities of three officers.
Furthermore, Singh clarified that when security forces preemptively engaged the terrorists, it worked to their advantage. He stated, “In Kokernag, terrorists were waiting and took advantage of the fire first that led to the killing of two army officers and a police officer.” The DGP emphasized that the operation spanned seven days and was executed successfully, culminating in the elimination of the notorious LeT terrorist Uzair Khan and his accomplice.
