Mitchell Starc has clinched the title of the most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after being secured by the Kolkata Knight Riders for a staggering Rs 24.75 crore during the auction in Dubai. This hefty price tag surpassed the previous record held by his teammate Pat Cummins, who was acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 20.50 crore.
The auction witnessed an intense bidding war for Starc, with Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals initially leading the charge. However, as the two teams withdrew, Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders escalated the bidding to new heights, surpassing the Rs 20.50 crore spent on Cummins. Eventually, Gujarat Titans bowed out at Rs 24.75 crore, allowing Kolkata Knight Riders to secure Starc at a record-breaking price.

Starc, who made a comeback to the IPL auction after several years, boasts an impressive international record with 73 wickets in 58 T20Is and multiple World Championships with Australia. With 647 international wickets in 262 matches, he stands as one of the premier fast bowlers of the modern era.
During his previous stint in the IPL with Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2014-15, Starc managed to secure 34 wickets in 27 matches. Prior to Starc’s record-breaking deal, Cummins had set the bar high as the costliest player in IPL history when Sunrisers Hyderabad acquired him for Rs 20.50 crore at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. This surpassed the previous record held by Sam Curran, who was sold to Punjab Kings for Rs 18.50 crore in 2022.
