Kashmir Celebrates International Mountain-Day 2023 with Sustainable Tourism Pledge
In a momentous celebration of International Mountain Day 2023, the Tourist Directorate in Kashmir orchestrated a spectacular event at the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar. The occasion, graced by the esteemed presence of Dr. Syed Abid Rashid, Secretary to the Government Department of Tourism and Culture, unfolded as a beacon of hope for sustainable tourism practices.
Dr. Rashid, the chief guest, emphasized the importance of preserving mountain ecosystems and underscored the commitment to responsible tourism. The gathering included luminaries such as the Director of Tourism Kashmir, senior officials from the Department of Tourism, representatives from various travel trade organizations, and passionate adventurers from diverse clubs and associations.

Dr. Abid highlighted the tremendous growth of tourism in Kashmir, with the valley recording a significant increase in the number of visiting tourists from across the country. He commended the department for its efforts in increasing the tourist footfall, surpassing 20 million visitors this year in various segments like adventure, leisure, and pilgrimages.To accommodate the influx of tourists, Dr. Abid stressed the need to diversify tourism products, explore and develop new destinations, and introduce fresh activities.
He assured stakeholders of continued support and called for coordinated efforts from all involved parties.In addressing the responsibility of trekkers, Dr. Abid urged them to show a sense of responsibility by not leaving any waste during trekking in hill areas.
He emphasized the sensitivity of the region as a biodiversity hotspot, urging trekkers to respect the ecology and biodiversity to preserve the mountains’ scenic beauty.The event featured impactful presentations aligning with this year’s theme, “Restoring Mountain Ecosystems.” Speakers passionately advocated for sustainable tourism practices, highlighting the collective responsibility to protect and conserve these breathtaking landscapes.
In an effort to foster local engagement, two pioneering projects were inaugurated in collaboration with S IDBI. The launch of homestay entrepreneurship and paragliding training initiatives promises not only economic growth but also a deepened connection between tourists and local communities.
Additionally, maps unveiling 30 new offbeat trekking routes aim to encourage exploration beyond traditional paths.Tourism officials stated that the event served as a platform to recognize outstanding achievements in adventure tourism. Associations and individuals with exemplary contributions to the field were felicitated, showcasing the spirit of innovation and dedication within the adventure tourism community.
The event concluded on a high note, leaving an indelible mark and inspiring a collective commitment to preserving the pristine beauty of mountainous regions through sustainable tourism practices.
