PPP Leader Advocates Postponement of Elections in Security-Threatened Areas in Pakistan

Abdul Qadir Baloch, a leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and former federal minister, has proposed the postponement of elections in regions facing security threats, suggesting that by-polls could later be conducted in these constituencies, as reported by Dawn News on Sunday.

Baloch emphasized that instead of entirely postponing the polls, it would be more suitable to delay elections in sensitive areas. He underlined the impracticality of derailing democracy by delaying elections for a few seats out of the total 236.

Highlighting security concerns, Baloch drew attention to the increased threat posed by the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Balochistan, comparing it to the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

He pointed out the heightened TTP attacks in Balochistan, particularly targeting areas like Kalat, Mastung, and neighboring regions.

Expressing concerns over separatist elements impeding election campaigns and the reluctance of these elements to engage in parliamentary politics, Baloch suggested that Bugti should have privately conveyed threats to JUI-F leader Fazlur Rehman instead of publicly announcing them in the media.

Additionally, Baloch urged the government to take measures to safeguard politicians and fulfill its responsibility, considering the imminent threats faced by political figures in the country.

The political landscape in Pakistan has witnessed an increase in terror activities, particularly in KP and Balochistan, following the TTP’s termination of its ceasefire with the government in November last year.

Despite the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and President Arif Alvi agreeing on February 8, 2024, as the election date, concerns regarding security challenges persist, as noted by various political leaders and officials.

According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), the country saw a 34% rise in anti-state violence in the previous month, underscoring the escalating security situation.
