Kokernag Encounter Enters Third Day: 2-3 Militants Trapped
The ongoing encounter in the Kokernag forest area of Anantnag district has entered its third day. Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Vijay Kumar, has confirmed that 2-3 militants are trapped in the area, and the operation will continue until they are neutralized.
Avoiding Ambush Hypothesis
ADGP Vijay Kumar advised retired police and Army officers to avoid presenting the “ambush hypothesis,” emphasizing that the operation is based on specific input and is in progress to neutralize the trapped militants.
Intensive Use of Force
Security forces have been using grenades, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), and other heavy weaponry against the militants. A soldier who was critically injured in the initial firefight two days ago succumbed to his injuries today. Drone images from the area show extensive destruction of a suspected militant hideout.
Continuous Firing and Evacuation
Intermittent firing has continued throughout the day, and the operation temporarily halted in the evening. Civilians residing near the area have been evacuated to safer locations. Security forces are using drones, including herons, to locate and neutralize the militants.
Challenges in Tough Terrain
Due to the challenging forest terrain, there is no confirmation regarding whether any militants have been killed thus far. The operation is ongoing, and security forces are utilizing advanced weapons and devices to locate and engage the hiding terrorists.
This encounter is one of the largest in South Kashmir since August 5, 2023. It has claimed the lives of several security personnel, including Colonel Manpreet Singh, Major Aashish Dhonchak, and DySP Humayun Bhat, along with other soldiers. The security forces remain committed to countering terrorist threats and maintaining security in the region.
