India Embarks on Biogas Blending to Reduce Natural Gas Imports

In a significant move to boost domestic energy consumption and reduce dependency on imports, India plans to blend compressed biogas with natural gas, starting from April 2025.

    Phased Introduction of Biogas Blending

The Indian government has announced a phased introduction of biogas blending, beginning with 1% for use in automobiles and households from April 2025. This percentage is set to increase to about 5% by 2028, reflecting a growing commitment to energy self-sufficiency.

    Focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Alongside biogas blending, the government aims to incorporate 1% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in aircraft turbine fuel by 2027, which is expected to double to 2% by 2028. Initially, this measure will apply to international flights.

Toward Net Zero Emissions by 2070

These initiatives are part of India’s broader strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2070. By reducing reliance on imported natural gas and promoting sustainable fuel alternatives, India is taking significant steps towards a more self-reliant and environmentally sustainable future.
