Samsung Display’s Shift to Blue Phosphorescent OLED Technology
Samsung Display, known for its innovative screen technologies, is reportedly planning a significant shift in its mobile screen production. The company is expected to incorporate blue phosphorescent OLED (PHOLED) material in its mobile displays by the second half of 2025, marking a departure from its current use of blue fluorescent materials.
Enhanced Efficiency with Blue PHOLEDs
The move to blue PHOLEDs is anticipated to substantially improve battery life and reduce power consumption in smartphones. Currently, Samsung’s panels use blue fluorescent materials with a 25% internal luminous efficiency, while red and green PHOLEDs boast 100% efficiency. This transition to blue PHOLEDs could significantly enhance overall energy efficiency.
Expected Debut in Future Foldable Devices
The introduction of blue phosphorescent OLED technology is likely to align with the release of Samsung’s future foldable devices, potentially the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, expected around 2025. Samsung traditionally unveils its foldable lineup in the second half of each year.
Challenges in PHOLED Development
Earlier speculations suggested the introduction of blue PHOLEDs in the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. However, due to reported development challenges, this implementation might be postponed to the seventh iteration of these foldable phones.
Durability Concerns and Future Outlook
Despite the advantages, blue PHOLED technology faces durability challenges, with a lifespan reportedly 55% that of fluorescent blue diodes. As Samsung has not officially confirmed these developments, the details around the implementation of PHOLED technology in their future mobile OLED panels remain speculative.
