Strategic Partnership Between India and Australia
Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles emphasized the critical importance of the India-Australia relationship during the second India-Australia 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue. He highlighted that both nations, sharing significant trade ties with China, also face similar security concerns, making their collaboration more vital than ever.
Common Grounds and Democratic Values
Marles pointed out the shared history and democratic traditions of India and Australia, including the rule of law and freedom of speech. He noted that the strategic alignment between the two countries is stronger than it has ever been, underscoring the immense value Australia places on this relationship.
Focus on Defence and Regional Cooperation
In the ministerial dialogue, Marles expressed his eagerness to discuss the strategic landscape, maritime domain awareness, and diplomatic cooperation, especially in their surrounding region. He also noted the year’s significant developments in defense, including the first visit of an Indian submarine to Australia and the highest tempo of defense exercises in the history of both countries.
Cricket as a Symbol of Bilateral Ties
Reflecting on the cultural ties between the two nations, Marles recalled attending the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and commended India for hosting the tournament, which showcased cricket to the world. He further mentioned that for cricket enthusiasts, India has become a pilgrimage destination, symbolizing the strong relationship shared by the two countries.
