Comprehensive Rescue Plan for Trapped Workers in Silkyara Tunnel

The Indian government has launched a robust action plan to rescue 41 workers trapped in the Silkyara Tunnel in Uttarkashi since November 12. Road, Transport and Highways Secretary Anurag Jain affirmed the government’s commitment to safely rescue all the labourers.

Five-Option Action Plan and Agency Involvement

The rescue strategy involves five different options, each assigned to a specific agency. The agencies involved include Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Sutluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVNL), Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), and Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDCL). Each agency has specific responsibilities in the rescue operation.

Tunnel Details and Rescue Challenges

The Silkyara Tunnel, part of the Char Dham all-weather road project, collapsed early last Sunday. A US-made auger machine, used in the rescue efforts, developed a snag, causing a temporary suspension of operations and heightening concerns.

Rescue Efforts and Worker Welfare

RVNL has initiated the construction of a vertical pipeline for essential supplies, while THDC is set to start micro-tunneling work from the Barkot end. SJVNL is tasked with vertical drilling for the rescue, with equipment being mobilized from Gujarat and Odisha. ONGC is also contributing with its deep drilling expertise. Essential items like multivitamins, antidepressants, and dry fruits are being sent to the trapped workers to maintain their health and morale.

Coordination and Communication Efforts

A high-level meeting led to the development of the five-option plan, with NHIDCL MD Mahmood Ahmed coordinating efforts among the central agencies. Constant communication is being maintained with the trapped labourers to keep their spirits up.

Infrastructure Developments for Rescue

NHIDCL is creating an additional pipeline for food delivery, with significant progress already made in drilling. This tunnel will facilitate the delivery of more food items to the trapped workers. The area where the workers are trapped has already undergone concreting work, providing some safety measures.

The rescue operation showcases a coordinated and multi-agency effort, reflecting the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the trapped labourers.
