Tesla’s Fremont Factory Visit: Indian Talent Shines

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, during his four-day visit to the US, made a significant stop at Elon Musk’s Tesla manufacturing facility in Fremont, California. His visit, part of a broader engagement that includes attending the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) Ministerial Meeting and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, turned the spotlight on the electric vehicle giant Tesla and India’s connection to its success.

Indian Engineers and Finance Professionals at Tesla

Goyal took to social media to express his admiration for Tesla’s “state-of-the-art” Fremont factory. A notable observation during his tour was the presence of many talented Indian engineers and financial professionals in senior positions at Tesla. This representation of Indian talent in a global tech leader underscores the growing influence and contribution of Indian professionals in the international tech and automotive industries.

India’s Role in Tesla’s Supply Chain

Another highlight of Goyal’s visit was the emphasis on the significant role of Indian auto component suppliers in Tesla’s electric vehicle (EV) supply chain. With India on its way to doubling its component exports to Tesla, it reflects the country’s rising stature as a reliable partner in the global automotive supply chain, particularly in the EV segment.

Prospects of Tesla EV in India

Goyal’s visit to Tesla has sparked speculation about the possibility of Tesla EVs soon hitting Indian roads. Discussions around potential tax concessions for Tesla to establish a manufacturing base in India have gained momentum. A report from the Financial Times suggested that the Indian government might consider a uniform duty reduction on electric vehicles to 15%. This move could pave the way for Tesla’s entry into the Indian market, which has been a topic of much discussion, particularly in light of the high import duties currently imposed on completely built-up vehicles in India.
