India’s UN Vote Reflects Balanced Approach to Israel-Palestine Conflict

India recently voted in favor of a United Nations resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the “Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and in the occupied Syrian Golan.” This decision, made on Thursday, aligns with the stance of the majority of UN member states, though opposed by seven countries, including the United States and Canada, while eighteen countries abstained.

India’s Abstention from Previous UN Resolution

Weeks earlier, India had abstained from voting on a UN resolution that called for a humanitarian truce between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. This abstention was a nuanced position reflecting India’s concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and its stance against terrorism. The resolution did not explicitly condemn the terrorist attacks of October 7, leading to India’s decision to abstain after an amendment to include this condemnation failed to pass.

India’s Consistent Stance on Israel-Palestine Issue

India’s decision on these resolutions reflects its consistent and steadfast position on the Israel-Palestine issue. The Indian government has always supported a negotiated two-state solution, aiming for a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine to exist in peace alongside Israel. This position was reaffirmed by India’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Yojna Patel, emphasizing India’s holistic approach to the conflict.

Addressing the Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

Acknowledging the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, India has expressed its support for international efforts to de-escalate the situation and deliver humanitarian assistance. India has also contributed to these efforts and called for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages taken during the conflict.

India’s Evolving Response to the Conflict

Following the October 7 attacks, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi labeled the Hamas strike as “terrorist.” However, as the human cost of the war escalated, the Indian government’s stance evolved to a more balanced response, advocating for direct negotiations towards establishing a Palestinian state. This shift indicates India’s commitment to a diplomatic and peaceful resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
