
7 Pilgrims Dead In Hotel Fire Near Tarapith Temple in Bengal
Tarapith, Aug. 17, 2026 [VoM News]: It has been reported that at least seven people have tragically lost their lives, with several others suffering injuries, after a fire broke out early this morning in a hotel at Tarapith, the holy town in West Bengal’s Birbhum district.
The incident took place at around 4:30 AM on the ground floor of the four-story hotel building. At the time of the incident, the majority of the guests were asleep. Firefighting teams were dispatched to the location and were eventually successful in extinguishing the flames.
The injured guests were evacuated and then admitted to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital to receive medical care. It is currently unknown how the patients are faring.
The hotel premises were also attended by police officers, who are now initiating a formal investigation into the cause of the incident. Preliminary assessments by fire department experts suggest that an electrical short circuit might have been responsible for the fire. However, details are still emerging, and authorities are continuing to investigate all possible causes.

It is understood that the hotel was conveniently located very close to the Tarapith temple, a popular pilgrimage site that welcomes visitors from across the nation. Given its location, numerous tourists and pilgrims opt to reside in hotels and guesthouses situated near the temple for convenient access.
The local authorities are currently inspecting the hotel, and collecting information about the victims and other individuals who were present in the hotel at the time of the fire incident. More information is expected as the investigations and assessments continue.
