NALSAR Controversy: Over 700 Lawyers Demand Resignation of BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra

NALSAR Controversy: Over 700 Lawyers Demand Resignation of BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra

New Delhi, Aug. 17, 2026 [VoM NEWS]: In light of the NALSAR row, three legal associations have requested the Bar Council of India (BCI) chairman Manan Kumar Mishra to resign. Each of these associations has more than 700 Indian members.

Mishra, the bar council chairman, was requested by these associations to resign immediately after the BCI’s initial decision of disbarring NALSAR’s 2026 graduates from enrolling themselves with state bar councils. The groups cautioned that if Mishra refused to step down then other members of the bar council should file a no-confidence motion against him.

This plea comes one day after Mishra had apologized to the NALSAR law students for the whole episode. Although an order debarring the graduates from the Hyderabad based institute from joining state bar councils was later retracted, the initial order by the BCI had sparked outrage.

The lawyers’ collectives stated that this sequence of events had raised serious concerns regarding the operational methods and conduct of the bar council toward its law students. They strongly argued that students who have completed their degrees should not face problems concerning their enrollment with a state bar council because of administrative issues. The NALSAR law program dispute drew attention from legal fraternity across nation and made legal associations question the accountability of the BCI chair.

Legal forums added that the whole issue should not culminate in a mere apology but also institutional steps must be taken to avoid students facing similar predicament.
