    GUWAHATI, July 6 [VoM News]: Two Assam Rifles personnel were killed after insurgents ambushed their convoy in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Sunday, triggering a prolonged gunfight and a massive search operation by security forces. The incident happened on National Highway 202, about 8 km from Ukhrul town, when militants attacked a convoy of the 40 Assam Rifles.

    The deceased soldiers have been identified as Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman CM Singh. Security forces cordoned off the area and launched a massive search and area domination operation to track the attackers after the ambush. Locals reported hearing intense firing for several hours, suggesting an prolonged battle between militants and security forces.

    Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam condemned the ambush and said it was an act of trying to disturb the peace and harmony in the state. He offered condolences to the families of the slain soldiers and vowed that the culprits would be brought to justice. “I am sure that the security forces would take all actions to book the perpetrators of the heinous act as per law”, he said.

    Security forces have continued the search and domination operations and a forensic team would be at the spot soon.

    Security forces did not reveal the names of the militant groups which carried out the attack.
