Women Representation in Rajasthan Assembly After Elections
In the recently concluded Rajasthan assembly elections, out of 50 women candidates who contested, 20 emerged victorious. This figure represents a slight decrease in women’s representation in the assembly compared to the previous term. The outgoing 15th Rajasthan Assembly had 24 women members.
Winning Women Candidates from Major Parties
The victorious women candidates include nine each from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party, along with two Independents. The Congress winners were Shimla Devi, Sushila Dudi, Rita Chaudhary, Shika Meel Barala, Shobharani Kushwah, Anita Jatav, Indra, Geeta Barwar, and Ramila Khadia. From the BJP, the winners included Diya Kumari, Anita Bhadel, Manju Baghmar, Shobha Chauhan, Deepti Kiran Maheshwari, Kalpna Devi, Vasundhara Raje, Siddhi Kumari, and Nauksham Chaudhary. Ritu Banawat and Priyanka Chaudhary won as Independents.
BJP’s Victory and Congress’s Performance
The BJP secured a comfortable victory, winning 115 seats out of the 199 contested, while the Congress, which sought to break the state’s tradition of voting out incumbents every five years, managed to win 68 seats. The final result for one seat was still awaited with Congress leading narrowly.
Performance of Other Parties
In addition to BJP and Congress, the Bharat Adivasi Party won three seats, the Bahujan Samaj Party two, and Rashtriya Lok Dal and Rashtriya Loktantrik Party one each. Independents claimed eight seats.
Election Overview
Polling for 199 seats took place on November 25, with the election in Karanpur postponed due to the death of a Congress candidate. The results reflect the dynamic political landscape of Rajasthan and highlight the role of women in the state’s politics.
