Uttarakhand Pioneers Uniform Civil Code, Announces Defense Minister Rajnath Singh
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh declared on Sunday that Uttarakhand is poised to be the pioneer in implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across the nation. The adoption of a UCC in Uttarakhand was a significant electoral commitment made by the BJP during the 2022 state assembly elections.
Speaking at the “Uttarayani Kauthik” event organized by Uttarakhand natives, Rajnath Singh remarked, “I believe if any state is to lead in the implementation of a uniform civil code, it will be Uttarakhand.” However, he did not provide further details. Following his re-election, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami sanctioned the formation of a committee, led by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, to formulate the UCC during the inaugural cabinet meeting under his leadership.
Addressing the event in Lucknow, the Union Defense Minister highlighted that Uttarakhand, known for its divine heritage and courageous inhabitants, is now also gaining recognition as a hub of development. He commended the state’s remarkable progress over the past five years. Discussing the relationship between Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Rajnath Singh acknowledged the initial discord following Uttarakhand’s separation from Uttar Pradesh. However, he emphasized that unlike other state divisions, such as Telangana from Andhra Pradesh, the issues did not escalate, and the bond between the people of both states remained strong.
“The vibrant relationship between Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand prevailed, and despite outstanding issues, there was no discord among the residents of the two states. On the contrary, the ties continued to strengthen,” he added.
