Uttarakhand Assembly to Discuss Uniform Civil Code Implementation
The Uttarakhand Assembly is set to discuss the proposal for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on Saturday. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will preside over a cabinet meeting in the evening, following which the UCC Bill will be tabled in the Assembly on February 6. The UCC drafting committee, led by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, submitted the draft to Chief Minister Dhami. If approved, Uttarakhand will become the first Indian state post-independence to adopt the UCC, proposing uniform civil laws for all communities.
Historic Move for Uniform Civil Code
The UCC draft, handed over to the chief minister by the committee, aims to establish uniform civil laws related to marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance for all citizens, irrespective of their religion. The move aligns with the BJP’s resolution and fulfills a major promise made during the 2022 Assembly polls. The UCC Bill is a significant step toward realizing the vision of ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat’ and will be discussed in the upcoming Assembly session.
