US Expresses Concerns Over Canada-India Diplomatic Row, Urges India to Uphold Diplomatic Relations
The United States has voiced its concerns over the ongoing diplomatic dispute between Canada and India, urging the Indian government not to insist on reducing Canada’s diplomatic presence in the country. The situation arose when India called for a reduction in the number of Canadian diplomats in response to allegations of their interference in India’s internal matters.
US Concerns and Diplomatic Relations
During a press briefing, the US State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, expressed the US’s concerns regarding the departure of 41 Canadian diplomats from India due to the Indian government’s request for Canada to significantly reduce its diplomatic presence. Miller urged the Indian government to cooperate with the ongoing Canadian investigation, emphasizing the importance of diplomats on the ground in resolving differences.
Compliance with Vienna Convention
The US further urged India to uphold its obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, specifically regarding the privileges and immunities enjoyed by accredited members of Canada’s diplomatic mission. This call reinforces the importance of adhering to international diplomatic norms and principles.
Background and Diplomatic Row
The diplomatic dispute between Canada and India emerged when Canada accused the Indian government of involvement in the fatal shooting of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has categorically denied these allegations and criticized them as “absurd” and “motivated.” The tensions have led to a reduction in the diplomatic presence of Canadian diplomats in India, with concerns over the impact on the well-being and daily lives of millions of people in both countries.
Resolution and Ongoing Discussions
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated its stance that India’s request for parity in mutual diplomatic presence was in line with international norms and not a violation. The MEA noted that discussions on achieving this parity are ongoing, emphasizing India’s commitment to maintaining diplomatic relations with Canada.
