
United Nations Human Rights Office Raises Concerns Over Mass Detentions During Delhi Protests, Spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan Reacts
GENEVA, October 10, 2026 [VoM News]: Amid the strong demonstrations, protests, in capital city of india, thousands of protestors were detained by the authorities.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Human Rights Office has expressed concern over reports of mass detentions in India before and during large-scale demonstrations in Delhi.
While Issuing a press release, UNHR has called on the authorities to respect the right to peaceful assembly.
In a statement issued on Saturday, UN Human Rights spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan raised concerns about the reported detention of protesters, demonstration leaders, civil society members, lawyers and journalists.
The UN Human Rights Office urged the Indian authorities to ensure that restrictions on peaceful demonstrations comply with the principles of necessity and proportionality.
It also called on law enforcement agencies to exercise maximum restraint while responding to peaceful protesters, in accordance with India’s democratic traditions and international human rights obligations.
The spokesperson emphasised that individuals subjected to arbitrary detention should be released immediately and without conditions.
The statement further urged authorities to engage in meaningful dialogue to address the concerns raised during the demonstrations.
The remarks came at a time when there were the reports of widespread police action and restrictions surrounding protests in the national capital.
Though, the statement did not provide an independent assessment of individual detention cases or specify the number of people taken into custody.
Now, the police action, protest restriction have gained the global attention as the major hunan rights body raised several concerns.
