Congress Announces Major Protest in Delhi on Monday, Demands CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation

NEW DELHI, October 10, 2026 [VoM News]: The Congress on Saturday said that it will hold a major protest march in the capital on Monday, October 12, to call for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar for alleged electoral irregularities.

Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal called on the INDIA bloc parties, political workers and citizens to join the demonstration, saying the party would not drop its demand. “Gyanesh must go. There will be no giving up,” Venugopal said.

He said a team of key Opposition leaders will take a memorandum to the Chief Justice of India alleging irregularities in the electoral process. The announcement came after police on Saturday stopped protesters linked to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) from staging a protest at Jantar Mantar.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and former chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Pinarayi Vijayan, Manik Sarkar were among several opposition leaders who were allegedly arrested during the protest.

Banerjee condemned the police action saying that protesters were treated as criminals. Rahul Gandhi-led INDIA bloc delegation met President Droupadi Murmu on Friday and presented him with a memorandum on the issues with the Election Commission.

The Election Commission has insisted on the contrary that it had no internal divisions on electoral procedures, with its previous decision being unanimous.
