Statehood for Jammu Kashmir Our Govt’s Top Priority: CM Omar Abdullah
JAMMU KASHMIR, MAY 11, 2026 [VoM News]: A fresh iota of hope for the restoration of statehood came into being when Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hinted at a soon-to-be-held meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah.
Omar spoke out on this matter, where he called the restoration of statehood to Jammu Kashmir the first priority of his government.
Omar said the process of restoration is ongoing, but it could not be achieved in a single round of discussions. He added that the issue has been raised with the Union government earlier too and expressed hope for progress through continuous engagement.
However, Omar said the meeting does not include the matter of statehood only. There are other issues too, like the reservation issue, business rules, and Centre-referred matters by the Lieutenant Governor.
Several opposition parties in Jammu Kashmir have urged the Omar-led government to accelerate the demand for the restoration of statehood to Jammu Kashmir.
When asked about the telecom powers question, Omar said this totally lies within the security establishment system, currently overseen by the Lieutenant Governor under the Union Territory administration.
