At least six people were killed when a gunman entered a home for the elderly in Daruvar, Croatia, on Monday and began shooting, CNN reported, citing Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT). The shooter, identified as a former member of a military police unit, entered the private residence armed with an unregistered short firearm and opened fire.

According to Croatian police chief Nikola Milina, five of the deceased were residents of the home, and one was an employee. Six additional people were injured during the incident. Milina mentioned that the gunman had previous encounters with the authorities and it is too early to determine the motive behind the shooting.

Following the attack, some of the injured received medical assistance. The gunman initially escaped but was later apprehended near a café. Five victims died immediately on the scene, as reported by HRT.

The Croatian Prime Minister, Andrej Plenkovic, expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and wished for the recovery of the injured in a post on X. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the incident. Deputy Prime Minister Davor Bozinovic, Minister of Health Vili Beros, and Social Policy Minister Marin Piletic are headed to Daruvar to assess the situation.

The police have not provided further details as the investigation continues to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
