In a cautious stance awaiting the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision, benchmark share indices closed nearly flat. The Sensex marginally gained by 0.05% to settle at 69584.60, while the Nifty rose by 0.1% or 19.95 points to end at 20936.

Although the indices dipped initially with a notable drag in IT stocks by over 2%, they managed to recover from the losses later in the session.

The market sentiment was affected by both domestic and U.S. inflation data, triggering concerns among traders about a potential delay in interest rate cuts.

India’s retail inflation surged to 5.55% in November, marking its fastest increase in three months. While this figure surpassed the RBI’s 4% target, it remains within the acceptable range of 2-6% for the third consecutive month.

The Indian rupee concluded steady against the US dollar, standing at 83.40.

Globally, shares reflected a mixed trend on Wednesday, with investors eagerly anticipating the Federal Reserve’s final policy decision of the year.

MSCI’s index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan declined by 0.7%. In contrast, Eurostoxx 50 futures saw a minor slip of 0.02%. Meanwhile, S&P 500 futures experienced a slight uptick of 0.1%, and Nasdaq futures rebounded by 0.17%.

The global market sentiment remained somewhat uncertain, primarily driven by the anticipation surrounding the Fed’s decision and hints regarding potential rate adjustments in the upcoming year.
