Byju’s, an edtech startup, has seen its valuation dramatically slashed by tech investor Prosus to under $3 billion. This represents an 86% decrease from its peak valuation of $22 billion last year, indicating significant financial challenges for the company.
Struggles and Disputes
After rapid growth during the Covid pandemic, Byju’s has encountered cash-flow issues and is currently entangled in a dispute with creditors over a $1.2 billion loan. The company’s difficulties have been highlighted by a series of valuation cuts, dropping from $11 billion in March to $5 billion in June, before the latest valuation cut by Prosus.
Corporate Challenges
Byju’s has faced internal corporate challenges, including the delayed filing of its 2021/22 financial results, which led to the resignation of auditor Deloitte and three board members. Additionally, the company’s chief financial officer and chief technology officer resigned last week. This turmoil came after the company reported a significant loss of Rs 2,250 crore.
Post-Covid Challenges and Legal Issues
Byju’s expanded significantly during the pandemic, acquiring several edtech startups globally. However, with the resumption of in-person classes, growth has slowed, and the company faces intensified legal disputes over the breach of covenants on its substantial loan.
Prosus, a major shareholder, expressed concerns about Byju’s management, stating that the company “regularly disregarded advice” aimed at improving governance. The exact reasons for the latest valuation cut were not disclosed.
Legal Battle with BCCI
Byju’s, previously the official sponsor of the Indian cricket team, is now facing legal action from the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) over missed payments of sponsorship royalties amounting to about $20 million.
The series of setbacks and governance issues have placed Byju’s in a precarious position, significantly impacting its valuation and highlighting the challenges it faces in stabilizing its operations post-pandemic.
