Pakistan PM Calls Cabinet Meeting to Discuss PTI Ban
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has convened a federal cabinet meeting today to deliberate on the potential ban of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), The Express Tribune reported. The cabinet will also review the current political situation in the country.
The proposed ban follows recent statements by Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ataullah Tarar, indicating the government’s intention to take legal action under Article 6 of the Constitution against former President Arif Alvi, PTI founder Imran Khan, and Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri.
Should the cabinet approve the ban, a case will be forwarded to the apex court. Potential measures include blocking the passports and identity cards of those involved and passing a parliamentary resolution, all within constitutional and legal frameworks.
In response, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly recently passed resolutions against the possible ban and called for the release of Imran Khan, as reported by The Express Tribune. The assembly session, chaired by Speaker Babar Saleem Swati, saw Law Minister Aftab Alam presenting resolutions citing a UN General Assembly Human Rights Committee report. The report claimed that the cases against Khan and his associates violated laws, and the resolution demanded Khan’s release.
Further, the resolution highlighted that the Supreme Court’s recent decision acknowledged PTI as Pakistan’s largest party, necessitating the allocation of specific seats accordingly. It also emphasized that banning PTI would violate Article 17 of the Constitution, which guarantees the freedom to form political parties. PTI has vowed to challenge any ban judicially and publicly.
The federal cabinet’s deliberation on this matter marks a significant moment in Pakistan’s political landscape, with potential implications for the nation’s democratic framework.
