Millions in Cash Delivered to Afghanistan Every 10-14 Days, Reports SIGAR

A newly released report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) reveals that millions of dollars, averaging $80 million per cargo, have been transported to Afghanistan in different shipments over the past three months. The cash deliveries, arriving in Kabul every 10 to 14 days, are stored in private banks in the UN’s accounts. Despite concerns about the economic and humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, the Taliban asserts that aid money delivered through the UN is spent on education, health, and development projects, with the group merely evaluating the progress of aid organizations’ activities.

Humanitarian Situation in Afghanistan Deteriorates

According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), around 69% of Afghans lack access to sufficient resources for basic necessities. The country’s economy has contracted by 27% since 2020, and 7 out of 10 Afghans struggle to meet their basic needs for food, healthcare, and employment. The international community’s support, delivered through monetary packages, is seen by some economic analysts as beneficial for fiscal stability and the economic growth of Afghanistan.

Taliban’s Assurance and Ongoing Challenges

The Taliban, currently in control, claims not to benefit from the aid money delivered to Kabul through the UN, stating that it is allocated for education, health, and development projects. However, the humanitarian situation has worsened since the collapse of the Afghan government in August 2021, with ongoing challenges, including rising food costs, affecting the common population. Serious human rights violations persist, particularly against women and minorities, as reported by Khaama Press. Women and girls continue to face discrimination and deprivation of fundamental rights amid the prevailing crisis.
