Maharashtra Cabinet Renames Mumbai Railway-Stations:Renaming Mumbai’s Colonial-Era Stations
In a significant move reflecting historical and cultural shifts, the Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the renaming of eight Mumbai railway stations, shedding their colonial-era names. The decision, made on Wednesday, aims to honor local culture and identity by replacing names associated with British rule.
Following this decision, Curry Road will now be known as Lalbaug, Sandhurst Road as Dongri, and Marine Lines as Mumbadevi. Similarly, Cotton Green will bear the name Kalachowki, Charni Road will be renamed Girgaon, Dockyard Road to Mazgaon, and King Circle to Tirthakar Parshivnath.

The renaming extends beyond mere symbolism, with Mumbai Central Station set to be rechristened Nana Jagannath Shankarsheth Station pending approval from the Railways Ministry. This move signifies a broader effort to reclaim historical narratives and celebrate local figures who have contributed significantly to the region’s heritage.
Furthermore, the cabinet’s decision to rename Ahmednagar district as Ahilya Nagar reflects a concerted effort to recognize and preserve regional identities across Maharashtra.

In addition to these changes, the cabinet has greenlit the construction of a sea link between Uttan (Bhayander) and Virar (Palghar), aimed at enhancing connectivity and infrastructure in the region.
Maharashtra Cabinet Renames Mumbai Railway-Stations:Continued Development Initiatives
The cabinet’s decisions underscore a commitment to both cultural revitalization and infrastructural development. Alongside the renaming efforts, the Maharashtra government has also approved the purchase of 2.5 acres of land in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, to construct a Maharashtra Bhavan. This move not only signifies expansion beyond state boundaries but also serves as a testament to Maharashtra’s cultural richness and diversity.
Furthermore, the recent inauguration of 10 high-speed Vande Bharat trains, including one between Ahmedabad and Mumbai Central, highlights ongoing efforts to modernize and enhance rail connectivity. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this initiative, emphasizing its potential to generate employment opportunities and boost local economies.
The decisions made by the Maharashtra Cabinet reflect a forward-looking approach that prioritizes both cultural heritage and development, signaling a dynamic vision for the state’s future.
