The Ciphergate Controversy: Imran Khan’s Ouster and Allegations
A look at the origins of the ciphergate controversy and its implications for Pakistan’s former PM.
In a recent development, Imran Khan’s lawyer has alleged that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman is being subjected to “mental torture” while in Adiala Jail. Naeem Hairder Panjotha, the chief lawyer of PTI, has claimed that Imran Khan is confined to a small room in the C-class jail and is denied the opportunity to step out for a walk. Additionally, there are doubts raised about the quality of food provided to the former Prime Minister, with a pending plea regarding the matter.

Panjotha’s concerns extend to the handling of the cipher case, which has been conducted in-camera. He advocates for an open trial and suggests that the conviction of PTI chairman in the cipher case is part of a larger strategy aimed at keeping Imran Khan out of politics.
Furthermore, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has taken a strong stance against the charges filed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and has called for the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the cipher case.
PTI’s spokesperson argues that the charges against the party chairman and vice chairman, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, are “meaningless and bogus” in the context of the cipher case.Interestingly, former PTI Secretary-General Asad Umar has not been included in the list of accused, while Imran Khan’s former principal secretary, Azam Khan, has been designated as a “strong witness” in the case. Additionally, the list of witnesses includes names such as former foreign secretaries Asad Majeed, Sohail Mehmood, and Faisal Niaz Tirmizi.
The legal proceedings related to the cipher case have seen extensions of Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s judicial remand until October 10. This case originated from allegations that PTI chairman and vice chairman had misplaced and misused a classified document for political purposes, leading to their arrest and the formation of a special court under the Official Secrets Act.
The ciphergate controversy first emerged in March 2022 when Imran Khan, shortly before his ouster in April 2022, revealed a letter he claimed to be a cipher from a foreign nation. He alleged that the letter called for his government’s removal from power. Later, he identified the United States as the sender of the cipher, accusing Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Affairs, Donald Lu, of seeking his removal.
Imran Khan’s former principal secretary, Azam Khan, further added to the seriousness of the cipher case by stating that the former PM had used the US cipher for his “political gains” and to evade a vote of no-confidence against him.
