Lal Bahadur Shastri Death Anniversary 2024: Honoring India’s Second Prime Minister
India commemorates the 58th death anniversary of its second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, today. The enduring impact of his iconic slogan, “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan,” bridging the gap between soldier and farmer, continues to resonate through the ages. Beyond his leadership, Shastri’s legacy lies in his ability to connect with the masses through humility, concealing a resolute spirit.
Born in 1904 in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh, Shastri’s formative years were marked by hardship. His father’s early demise led him to walk miles to school without shoes, embodying resilience from a young age. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, he joined the Non-Cooperation Movement at 16, marrying Lalita Devi in 1927, while actively participating in India’s struggle for independence.
Shastri’s political journey unfolded as a tireless worker for the Congress Party. His organizational prowess played a pivotal role in the party’s victories in 1952, 1957, and 1962. Assuming the role of Prime Minister in 1964 after Jawaharlal Nehru’s death, Shastri led India during the 1965 India-Pakistan War. His slogan during the conflict, ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,’ uplifted soldiers and farmers alike, addressing both military and food scarcity concerns.
Advocating for increased food production, Shastri championed the Green Revolution in 1965. However, his tenure as Prime Minister was brief, spanning only 19 months. Lal Bahadur Shastri’s untimely death in Tashkent on January 11, 1966, marked the end of an era. His profound influence on India’s shared existence, deeply rooted in the everyday experiences of its people, distinguishes him among the nation’s eminent figures.
