
Ladakh’s Urban Local-Bodies to Expand Their-Boundaries.image/daily excelsior
The Ladakh administration has recently taken a significant step to expand the jurisdiction of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) within the Union Territory. To facilitate this expansion, two dedicated committees have been established to formulate proposals for extending the boundaries of the Municipal Bodies in Leh and Kargil, which are the sole ULBs in Ladakh.
Each of these committees will be led by the respective Deputy Commissioners, ensuring that the process is overseen by those with intimate knowledge of the local dynamics and needs. The composition of these committees is as follows:
For the Leh committee, it comprises the Executive Officer of the municipal committee in Leh and Kargil, the President of the Municipal Committee in Leh, members of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) representing Upper and Lower Leh Councils, or any other members nominated by the LAHDCs, Tsewang Dorje, a representative from the Housing & Urban Development Department, and a representative from the Rural Development Department.
On the other hand, the Kargil committee includes the Executive Officer of the Municipal Committee in Kargil, the President of the Municipal Committee in Kargil, LAHDC Council members representing the Town Council in Kargil, or any other members nominated by the LAHDC. It also includes Zakir Hussain, a representative from the Housing & Urban Development Department, and a representative from the Rural Development Department.
This forward-thinking initiative signifies Ladakh’s commitment to effective urban governance and a vision for enhancing the development and management of urban areas within the Union Territory. By extending the boundaries of these ULBs, the administration aims to better serve the needs of the growing population and provide essential urban services to all residents.
