
Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir Appointed as US Ambassador to Indonesia
In a significant diplomatic appointment, President Joe Biden has named Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir, an Indian-origin diplomat, as the United States Ambassador to Indonesia. With nearly 30 years of dedicated service within the State Department, Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir has achieved this high-ranking position as a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, holding the title of Minister-Counselor. Her most recent role was as the Executive Secretary of the Department of State, as officially announced by the White House.
Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir’s familial roots trace back to India, as her father, Noor, embarked on a journey to the United States from Mumbai in the 1940s to pursue his education at the University of California, Berkeley. She is a distinguished alumna of Harvard University, where she completed her undergraduate studies, and she holds an MS from the National War College.
This is not her first ambassadorial role. From 2017 to 2021, Ms. Lakhdhir served as the US Ambassador to Malaysia. She also assumed the role of US Consul General in Belfast, Northern Ireland, from 2009 to 2011. Her career in foreign service commenced in 1991, and it includes a notable stint as the Director of the Office of Maritime Southeast Asian Affairs, which encompasses her responsibilities related to US relations with Indonesia. Early in her career, she served as Deputy Coordinator of the Taiwan Coordination Staff in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs.
Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir’s extensive international assignments have spanned regions such as China, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia. Her upbringing in Westport, Connecticut, significantly influenced her decision to pursue a career in international diplomacy. In an interview published in the National Museum of American Diplomacy, she noted that her “international career began as a child” due to her parents’ rich international background and family travels abroad.
Her journey into international service commenced as a teacher in China, where she dedicated two years following her graduation from Harvard College in 1986.This noteworthy appointment exemplifies her remarkable career trajectory and the significant role she continues to play in shaping US foreign policy and international relations. As the US Ambassador to Indonesia, Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir will represent the United States on the global stage, furthering diplomatic efforts and fostering international collaboration between the two nations.
