
Justice Sanjeev Kumar Appointed Acting Chief Justice of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh High Court
JAMMU, June 01, 2026 [VoM News]: The President of India has appointed Justice Sanjeev Kumar to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh under Article 223 of the Constitution of India.
According to a notification issued by the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, on June 1, 2026, Justice Sanjeev Kumar will assume the responsibilities of Acting Chief Justice following the elevation of Justice Arun Palli from the post of Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh to the Supreme Court of India.
Justice Sanjeev Kumar was born on April 8, 1966, and obtained his law degree from the University of Jammu in 1989. He enrolled as an advocate in the same year and practised primarily before the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir, handling civil, constitutional, service, and taxation matters. He also served as Senior Additional Advocate General for the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir.
Five Judges Elevated to Supreme Court of India, Strength Totals to 37
He was appointed as a permanent Judge of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir on June 6, 2017. During his tenure on the Bench, Justice Sanjeev Kumar has delivered several significant judgments dealing with constitutional rights, service law, preventive detention, land laws, and public administration.
The appointment has been made in exercise of powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution, which enables the President to appoint an Acting Chief Justice when the office of the Chief Justice of a High Court falls vacant or when the Chief Justice is unable to perform the duties of the office.
With this appointment, Justice Sanjeev Kumar will head the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh until a regular Chief Justice is appointed. The notification issued by the Department of Justice came into effect on June 1, 2026.
