India’s Uma Sekhar Elected to UNIDROIT Governing Council in Historic Win
India secured a historic victory as Uma Sekhar became the first woman candidate elected to the Governing Council of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT). This landmark decision took place during the recent elections held in Rome, Italy, where 32 contestants vied for 25 positions on the council, including representatives from Russia, the USA, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, France, and other nations.
Uma Sekhar clinched the victory with an impressive tally of 45 votes out of 59 in the initial round, surpassing the requirement of 21 votes for council membership. Her election marks India’s participation in the Governing Council for the term of 2024-28.
In response to this significant achievement, the Indian Embassy in Rome expressed its delight and pride, emphasizing the privilege of contributing to UNIDROIT’s policy-making process. The Embassy announced India’s successful tenure as the President of the General Assembly for the year 2022-23 and highlighted the country’s commitment to actively participating in the organization’s affairs.
The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) operates as an independent intergovernmental organization headquartered in Rome, Italy. Its primary objective is to evaluate the requirements and mechanisms necessary for modernizing, aligning, and coordinating private law, particularly in the commercial domain, among various States and groups of States. UNIDROIT formulates uniform legal instruments, principles, and regulations to facilitate the accomplishment of these objectives.
