India’s Recommendations to Canada at UN Human Rights Council
During the UN Human Rights Council review meeting, India offered suggestions to Canada for improving its domestic policies. Indian diplomat Mohammed Hussain commended Canada’s legislative efforts like the National Housing Strategy Act and the Accessible Canada Act but also highlighted areas needing attention.
Addressing Misuse of Freedom of Expression
India recommended that Canada strengthen its domestic framework to prevent the misuse of freedom of expression, particularly in cases of inciting violence. This recommendation aims to mitigate activities by groups promoting extremism.
Combatting Hate Crimes and Safeguarding Minorities
India urged Canada to take effective measures to prevent attacks on religious and racial minorities’ places of worship. Additionally, India called for the enhancement of legislative and other measures to address hate crimes and hate speech.
Global Perspectives and Bilateral Tensions
India’s suggestions echo concerns raised by neighboring countries, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, about racism, hate speech, and discrimination against minorities in Canada. The recommendations come amid a diplomatic standoff between India and Canada, following Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s comments on the alleged Indian involvement in the killing of a Khalistani terrorist. Trudeau’s statements have strained bilateral relations, with India categorically rejecting these claims as baseless and motivated. Despite the tensions, Trudeau expressed a desire for Canada to work constructively with India while emphasizing the importance of adhering to international law.
