Indian Army Secures Rs 2800 Crore Proposal for Pinaka Rocket Launchers
The Indian Defence Ministry has sanctioned a substantial Rs 2,800 crore proposal aimed at acquiring approximately 6,400 rockets designed for the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher systems. Defence sources from the recent Defence Acquisition Council meeting confirmed the approval of two types of rockets: Area Denial Munition Type 2 and Type 3.
These rockets will be procured exclusively from indigenous sources by the Indian Army. Economic Explosives Limited of Solar Industries and Munitions India Limited, established as part of the corporatisation of former Ordnance Factories, are the primary contenders vying for the contract, as per sources.
Named after the bow of the Hindu deity Shiva, the Pinaka weapon system was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It stands among the first few Indian military systems exported to foreign nations, including Armenia.
Notably, private sector firms such as Larsen & Toubro, Tata Defence, and Economic Explosives Limited have established production lines for the Pinaka system, actively supplying it in bulk to the armed forces.
Part of the broader artillery modernisation strategy, the Indian Army aims for 22 regiments of the Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher. These regiments boast launchers integrated with automated gun aiming systems and command posts.
Recent trials of the Pinaka rockets took place in the Pokharan firing ranges in Rajasthan. These tests showcased multiple successful test firings, signifying advancements and efficacy in the military’s artillery capabilities.
