Ahead of the Parliament-20 (P20) meeting of G20 nations’ presiding officers, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced that India will raise various issues with the Canadian Speaker of the Senate. The P20 Summit, scheduled for October 13 to 14 at the India International Convention and Expo Centre, Dwarka, will see the participation of presiding officers from 25 countries, along with 10 deputy speakers from G20 member nations and invitee countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit on October 13.

Canada will be represented at the P20 Summit by Speaker of the Senate Raymonde Gagne. The relationship between India and Canada has been strained recently due to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s remarks linking Indian agents to the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June.

“We will discuss issues that have been listed for the summit. Other issues will be discussed informally,” said Mr. Birla, addressing concerns about the use of the Canadian Parliament to make allegations against India.

The summit is expected to host over 350 delegates, including 50 members of Parliament, 14 general secretaries, 26 vice-presidents, the International Parliamentary Union president, and the president of the Pan-African Parliament. The main theme of the 9th P20 Summit is proposed to be ‘Parliaments for One Earth, One Family, One Future.’

The P20 Summit will feature sessions on topics such as “Transformation in People’s Lives through Public Digital Platforms,” “Women-led Development,” “Accelerating SDGs,” and “Sustainable Energy Transition.” Additionally, a pre-summit event called the Parliamentary Forum on Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) is scheduled for October 12 at Yashobhoomi. An exhibition titled ‘Mother of Democracy’ will also be organized to highlight India’s ancient and participative democratic traditions.

Delegates attending the P20 Summit will have the opportunity to tour the new Parliament House, participate in a cultural evening, and attend a dinner hosted by the speaker.
