India Reaches Out to UAE Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

In a significant diplomatic move, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar initiated the first outreach from India to the Arab world in response to the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas militants. Jaishankar held discussions regarding the “crisis” in West Asia during a phone conversation with his counterpart from the UAE, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The two foreign ministers deliberated on the evolving situation.

Global Concerns Over Israel-Hamas Conflict

The conflict between Hamas militants from Gaza and Israeli forces, which began with a series of multi-pronged attacks by Hamas on Israel, followed by Israeli retaliation, has resulted in a significant loss of lives. Israeli authorities reported more than 1,200 people killed in Israel, including 155 soldiers, while the Palestinian side indicated a death toll of 950 in Gaza.

The UAE, on October 7, issued a statement urging all parties involved to exercise the utmost restraint and implement an immediate ceasefire. The sudden escalation in hostilities has drawn widespread international concerns, with leading powers such as Germany, the US, France, and the UK emphasizing the importance of preventing further escalation.

India’s Support for Israel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India’s firm support for Israel in a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He offered deep condolences and sympathy for the victims of the terrorist attacks in Israel and reiterated India’s strong and unequivocal condemnation of terrorism in all its forms.

India’s response to the escalating conflict has been limited to statements made by the Prime Minister and the Ministry of External Affairs. India has expressed its commitment to supporting efforts to resume direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians in pursuit of a two-state solution. The Ministry of External Affairs has set up a round-the-clock control room in Delhi and separate emergency helplines in Tel Aviv and Ramallah to monitor the situation and provide assistance to Indian citizens. Approximately 18,000 Indian nationals reside in Israel, and there have been no reports of casualties among them.

Safety Advisory for Indian Nationals

In response to the situation, the Indian embassy in Israel issued a safety advisory to all Indian nationals in the country, urging them to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols recommended by local authorities.
