High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections Advances Deliberations
The High-Level Committee (HLC) headed by Ram Nath Kovind, former President of India, convened its third meeting in New Delhi on Sunday. The committee, tasked with examining the feasibility of simultaneous elections in the country, saw the participation of eminent members including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Arjun Ram Meghwal, NK Singh, Dr. Subhash C. Kashyap, and Shri Sanjay Kothari.
Confirmation of Minutes and Action Taken
During the meeting, Chairman Kovind, along with the members, confirmed the minutes of the second meeting held on October 25, 2023, and reviewed the action taken on the decisions made during that meeting. Secretary of the Committee, Dr. Niten Chandra, provided an overview of the follow-up actions taken based on decisions from the second meeting and throughout the intervening period.
Public Participation and Responses
The committee has actively sought public input on simultaneous elections, issuing a public notice on January 5 through 105 leading newspapers across the country. Citizens were invited to provide suggestions for changes in the existing legal-administrative framework to enable simultaneous elections by January 15. A total of 20,972 responses were received, with 81% expressing support for the idea of simultaneous elections. Additionally, suggestions were sought from 46 political parties, and responses from 17 parties have been received to date. The Election Commission of India also presented its suggestions to the committee.
Consultations with Key Stakeholders
Chairman Kovind initiated consultations with various stakeholders, including eminent jurists, former Chief Justices of the Supreme Court and High Courts, former Chief Election Commissioners of India, and heads of major industry associations such as FICCI, ASSOCHAM, and CII.
Upcoming Meeting and Continued Deliberations
The HLC is set to reconvene for its next meeting on January 27, indicating the committee’s commitment to a comprehensive examination of the issues surrounding simultaneous elections in India. As deliberations continue, the HLC aims to provide valuable recommendations to the government on this significant constitutional and electoral matter.
