FPIs and Indian Markets in 2023

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) were net buyers in the Indian stock market in 2023, with a notable uptick in December. FPI investments slowed down in early January, but the total inflow stands at ₹9,034 crore as of January 12, encompassing debt, hybrid, debt-VRR, and equities. Analysts attribute the surge in December to strong global cues, including the US Federal Reserve’s indication of the end of its tightening cycle. FPIs showed significant interest in financial services and information technology during this period. Despite the early January slowdown, analysts expect FPI buying to continue in 2024, driven by India’s growth prospects and the anticipated decline in US interest rates.
